When Did Being Stressed Become Normal?
There was a time when stress was our body's natural response to danger, a temporary state designed to help us survive. Today, however, many of us seem to live in that state almost constantly. We rush from one task to the next, answer emails late into the evening, fill every spare moment with something productive, and wear busyness like a badge of honour.
Somewhere along the way, being busy has become the equivalent to being successful, important, or valued. Rest can feel uncomfortable, even guilt-inducing, as though slowing down means we are falling behind. For many people, the pace of life becomes so familiar that stress no longer feels like an exception, it feels like the norm.
Over time, this constant state of "doing" can become difficult to switch off. We may find ourselves checking our phones without thinking, filling empty moments with distractions, or feeling restless when there is nothing demanding our attention. The body and mind can become so accustomed to operating at high alert, that true relaxation can feel alien to us and for some even uncomfortable .
Yet we were never designed to function in a permanent state of stress. Our minds and bodies need periods of rest, reflection, and recovery, just as much as they need activity. Without these moments, chronic stress can begin to affect our sleep, relationships, physical health, and emotional wellbeing.
Counselling offers an opportunity to step out of the cycle. It provides a space to pause, reflect, and become curious about the beliefs and pressures that keep us constantly striving. Together, we can explore healthier ways of responding to life's demands, learning that rest is not a luxury or a sign of weakness, it is an essential part of living well.
Perhaps the question isn't, "How can I fit more into my day?" but rather, "What would it feel like to give myself permission to simply be?" Sometimes, that small shift in perspective is the beginning of a healthier, happier and more balanced life.
I offer in person counselling sessions in Lindfield Haywards Heath, West Sussex, and online sessions across the country. If you are interested in having some sessions with me feel free to get in touch for a free initial consultation.
