When the Mind Won’t Switch Off…

At night, when the world grows quiet, our thoughts can become louder. We replay conversations, anticipate tomorrow and revisit worries we haven’t had time to process during the day.

Overthinking is often more than thinking too much. It can be the mind’s attempt to create safety or control, shaped by stress, uncertainty, perfectionism or past experiences that have left us feeling on guard. When distractions fade, emotions we’ve pushed aside may finally surface.

In therapy, we can gently explore what lies beneath the racing mind through talking and somatic practices. Talking helps us recognise patterns, understand underlying fears and uncover what our thoughts may be trying to protect us from. Somatic work brings awareness to the body through grounding, movement, breath, helping us reconnect with the present moment and to release whatever emotions may be trapped inside of our bodies.

The aim isn’t to silence the mind, but to change our relationship with it. To recognise that not every thought needs an answer, not every feeling needs fixing, and not every uncertainty must be resolved before we can rest.

Sometimes, the path to a quieter mind begins with feeling safer in our bodies and allowing ourselves to let go, one breath at a time.

I am a qualified Integrative counsellor offering in person sessions in Lindfield West Sussex, and online sessions across the UK.
